Types of Tick Problems
Lone star tick
These are rare in Colorado, but they have been reported in certain counties and may hitch a ride from other states in vehicles or on human or animal hosts. Female lone star ticks have a distinctive white spot on their backs. The species is notorious for its aggressive feeding habits, which can induce an allergy to red meat in some people.
Black-legged tick (deer tick)
This tick is the main culprit behind Lyme disease, and like all ticks, they’re sneaky. They prefer shaded, moist environments and often lurk in leaf litter, tall grass, and wooded areas.
Rocky Mountain wood tick
Found in wooded and shrubby areas, these ticks are most active in spring and early summer. They’re known carriers of Colorado tick fever and tularemia.
American dog tick
One of the most common ticks in Northern Colorado, this species prefers grassy areas and trails but will happily hitch a ride into your yard. While they don’t spread Lyme disease, they can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Brown dog tick
Unlike other species, this tick can infest homes, kennels, and dog bedding, making it a year-round concern for pet owners.
